KENNEDY SPACE CENTER VISITOR COMPLEX, FL (Nov 2024) – NASA space shuttle seamstress and thermal protection specialist Jean Wright received the prestigious “Women in American History Award” as presented by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) based in Washington, D.C, during a ceremony held at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center, Florida in front of the space shuttle Atlantis Exhibit.
The “Women in American History Award” was given to Jean for her work sewing critical thermal blankets that saved the astronauts lives and protected them from deadly heat and radiation during reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
The DAR award ceremony was held on November 21, 2024, at 12:30 pm at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center, Florida in front of the space shuttle Atlantis Exhibit.
“The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) takes pride in recognizing ‘Women who have made a difference in their communities, their state, our country and around the world,’ said the DAR in a statement.
DAR representatives flew down from the NSDAR headquarters in Washington, D.C. and presented the award and medal to Jean Wright – during a ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center.
The award was presented by two members of the Fairfax County Chapter, NSDAR, of Vienna, Virginia. They are Honorary Regent, Trisha Phillips-Holbert and Vice Regent Suzy Mulligan, both who are also American History committee co-chairs. Local DAR members in Brevard County also attended
Among the previous receipients of the Women in American Histopry Award’ are Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earnhardt, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Anne-Louise Brillon Jouy and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Baden Ginsberg, to name a few.

NASA Thermal protection specialist Jean Wright to receive NSDAR Women in American History Award
On November 21, 2024, at 12:30pm at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center, at the space shuttle Atlantis Exhibit, NASA space shuttle seamstress Jean Wright will receive the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Women in American History Award.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) takes pride in recognizing women who have made a difference in their communities, their state, our country and around the world. Chapters have recognized women who have made an impact, among them are Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earnhardt, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Anne-Louise Brillon Jouy and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Baden Ginsberg, to name a few. Ms. Wright is being awarded the Women in American History Award because of her unique talents and contributions as a thermal protection specialist and NASA seamstress working with the space shuttle program.
Jean is the subject of the award-winning children’s book “Sew Sisters: The Untold Story of Jean Wright”, whose author, Elise Matich lives in Alexandria, Virginia. Jean was one of eighteen women who created, built and repaired thermal protection flight hardware and parachutes, using handstitching and sewing machines. Jean’s work includes the Endeavour, Atlantis and Discovery space shuttle missions as well as working on test parachutes and skirt blankets for the Orion spacecraft. Jean is also a docent at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and a space journalist and photographer at Space UpClose news website.
