Piece of SpaceX rocket will soon crash into the moon. A large piece of a SpaceX rocket will likely make a crash landing this week — but it is not expected to smash into Earth soon. Instead, the rocket’s upper stage will collide with the moon. On Wednesday, the rocket’s upper stage is expected to slam into the moon near Einstein Crater with the force of three tons of TNT. TITUSVILLE, FL – On August 5, I was interviewed live on LIVE NOW from Fox about the imminent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage rocket crash into the Moon just about 2 hours hour away at about 2:35 a.m. ET – that’s on a collision course crashing into the Moon at 5400 mph!

Also: Why its great for science! The impact will create an ejecta plune that may rise 40 to 60 miles altitude by some 4 to 5 minutes after impact

But – also points out the need for Planetary defense of the Moon and Earth

The impact of the 45 foot long stage with a mass of over 8000 pounds is unplanned by SpaceX.

It is expected to hit new the Moons near side limb nearby to Einstein crater in the northwest region

The upper stage derives from the successful launch of 2 commercial lunar landers – including the highly successful FireFly Blue Ghost Mission 1 lander under contract to NASA’s CLPS program

The Falcon 9 launched on Jan 15, 2025

The impact will not be visible to the naked eye.

Perhaps some professional and amateur astronomers may see it with high powered telescopes.

NASA is planning to try and image the impact within a week or two using its LRO Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the moon

LRO launched in 2009 along with the LCROSS lunar impactor searching for ice at the lunar south pole.

I visited LRO and LCROSS prelaunch in the KSC cleanroom and wrote multyiple stories for various magazine and websites
