The astronaut quartet began their exciting voyage with a very beautiful, extremely loud and bright late afternoon blastoff on April 1 on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion Moon rocket propelled the Artemis II crew on NASA’s history making journey hurling the first humans to the Moon and back in more than 50 years – since NASA’s Apollo era.
The NASA SLS (Space Launch System) Moon rocket launches with the four person American and Canadian Artemis II crew aboard the Orion spacecraft at 6:35 p.m. EDT on April 1, 2026, from Launch Complex 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a 10-day lunar flyby mission – the first human mission to the Moon in over 50 years. The international crew of three American and one Canadian astronauts lifted off atop NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket generating 8.8 million pounds of ear-splitting, extremely bright and roaring thrust from Launch Pad 39B at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:35 p.m. EDT Wednesday, April 1, sending four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft on a planned 10 day test flight and lunar flyby looping around the Moon and back – on a free return trajectory.

The Artemis II crew returned safely from their lunar slingshot journey on April 10 – with a splashdown in the Pacific inside their Orion capsule dubbed ‘Integrity’
